Eastern Health Maroondah Breast and Cancer Centre

We provide services for screening through Breast Screen Victoria, initial assessment of breast symptoms, diagnostic investigation of breast conditions, surgical management of breast cancer and follow up of breast patients with benign disease or high risk of breast cancer. This clinic is offered at Box Hill Hospital and Maroondah Hospital.

We also provide a comprehensive and individualised cancer treatment with multidisciplinary services held for men and women in association with the Cancer Services unit and the Peter MacCallum radiotherapy services.

The centre also treats patients with other types of cancer. The clinics offer general oncology and geriatric oncology services and a rapid access oncology clinic for patients requiring urgent reviews.

Other services offered include breast plastic surgery, allied health and access to our breast care nursing team and lung cancer clinical nurse consultant who are specially trained nursing staff to assist in managing the care of people with breast and lung cancer throughout the course of their treatment.

Co-located within the Eastern Health Breast and Cancer Centre is Breast Screen Victoria. Breast Screen Victoria (BSV) is part of Breast Screen Australia, the national screening program for breast cancer. Breast Screen offers women aged 50-74 free mammograms, who meet the eligibility criteria, every two years.

The centre also partners with Monash University’s Eastern Clinical Research Unit, offering access to breast cancer clinical trials. There are currently six recruiting clinical trials operating from the Eastern Breast and Cancer Centre at Maroondah. Trial patients are supported by trials research nurses and oncologists through their treatment and follow up.

Everyone’s experience with anti-cancer treatment is different, but it is not uncommon to have one or more side-effects throughout your treatment.

If you are concerned about any of the following:

• A temperature of 38 degrees or greater
• Diarrhoea/constipation
• Nausea and/or vomiting
• Difficulty passing urine
• New/uncontrolled/persistent pain
• Skin rash
• Mouth ulcers
• Acid reflux/indigestion
• Cough
• Shortness of breath
• Tiredness/fatigue
• Issues with your central venous catheter
• Any other symptoms or concerns you may have
  you can call the Symptom and Urgent Review Clinic (SURC) nurse. 

Alternatively if you experience significant side effects please attend your local general practitioner or your nearest emergency department.

The Breast and Cancer Centre is available for appointment only, we are not able to manage ‘walk-ins’. If you are experiencing a breast issue, please see your GP. The Eastern Health Breast and Cancer centre requires referrals via eReferral.

Eastern Health Breast and Cancer Centre is now using HealthLink SmartForms for receiving referrals from GPs. HealthLink is a secure, safe electronic channel for delivery of identifiable clinical information between healthcare providers.
